Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany McKnight, Owner of Progress Consulting Ltd. Co., located in Harrodsburg, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide coaching-based accounting services to entrepreneurs who desire to impact the world positively. At this point, most of our clients are service-based companies which a concentration in construction and med spas.

Tell us about yourself

I tried many career paths but settled on accounting because I wanted to understand money. I grew up broke and never want to experience that life again, so I get up and do what I do each day because I see money being the barrier to freedom for so many. Poverty does no one any good, so if I can help people understand money in a way that allows them to be more authentic and live the life they were meant to live, they will inherently help more people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing my team. They are rock stars, and I could not do what I do without the ones I have now and will have in the future.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Starting. When you start a business, it's so simple to be overwhelmed by all the hats to wear, all the resources you need, all the tech, etc. After that, delegating and letting go of control was the hardest thing for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep it simple.
  2. Know your vision, mission, and values.
  3. Know who you want to serve.
  4. Know who you need on your team to help you serve your ideal client/customer.
  5. Start making standard operating procedures from day 1.
  6. Have one offer only and understand the costs of the service/product you offer.
  7. Price the profitability of your services based on the costs to serve.
  8. Make sure you have positive cash flow.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship is the key to freedom, and we have a duty to be successful (on our own terms) so that we reach our ultimate potential.
