Food Freedom & Body Image Coach - Brittany Braswell

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Braswell, MS, RDN, LD, located in Birmingham, AL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a non-diet Registered Dietitian and recovery coach for Christian women suffering from negative body image and disordered eating. In a diet culture that screams "thin = healthy" and "smaller is better," I'm tearing down the lies and bringing truth to what true health looks like so women can finally break free from food guilt and body shame.

Tell us about yourself

I used to work in a traditional treatment center setting for eating disorder recovery, but I quickly discovered something major was missing for most of these women -- hope. Those who approached their treatment process without faith in Christ and without a team to help them heal physically, mentally, and spiritually had a much harder time changing the way they viewed food and their body.

Now, as CEO of my own practice, I'm able to provide a Christ-centered approach to recovery for those who desire to make their faith a central component of their journey to food freedom. I've never seen so much growth and positive change in clients so quickly as I have when they let go of the burden to try recovering on their own and lean into the Lord to strengthen them throughout the process!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hands down -- bringing on a phenomenal team to help support my clients and students and grow the business! There's so much value in hiring the right people and training them in the skill sets they need vs. making a hiring decision based on skill set alone. The delegation has been a game changer for me and has allowed me to really lean into the parts of the business I love while stepping back from the areas I'm not needed as the CEO.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Reigning in the ideas to stay focused on completing one project at a time. As the visionary of my practice, I get SO many ideas about ways to serve our clients and students, but it's important to me that our company works with excellence and does a few things really well instead of providing a ton of different offers that are just mediocre.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you want to create and grow a business that also nourishes you as the owner, you can't let your business be your baby. It should be a machine. A baby requires constant attention and care, but a machine has systems and processes that allow parts of it to run on its own. If you don't have the right systems, processes, and teams in place, your business isn't going to give you more freedom. It's going to be something you can't seem to step away from.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As a business owner, it's so important to value and prioritize your health -- physically, mentally, and spiritually. When you're not feeling your best in each of those areas, your business suffers. Don't wait for your health to become a major barrier before taking intentional steps to improve it. Choosing to seek support from a Registered Dietitian is a great step to improving your health, as well as the health of your business.
