Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erik Croswell, Founder of Bridge City Media, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're Bridge City Media, a Portland video production and branding agency. We work with a wide array of businesses, nonprofits, and changemakers to produce effective media to support business growth strategies.

Tell us about yourself

For most of my life, I've loved to produce videos- starting out making short films with my friends on the weekends and now growing to run this business and producing creative video content for brands and documentary work. I love being able to show up every day with new challenges and ideas to create impactful stories, using my full skillset. We're always striving to get better every year and find innovative ways to be valuable relationships for our clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment is definitely the team that I've brought together and grown. I'm fortunate to work alongside some of the most brilliant and passionate filmmakers in Portland, and I'm constantly learning from them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It takes great skill to balance timing, expectations, and budgets when you have a couple of dozen projects happening simultaneously. The key's certainly been to create a system that's highly adaptable to unexpected shifts as they come up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be smart about timing when to do things yourself and when to start delegating to contractors and employees.
  2. You don't have to be a genius about every aspect of your business, but take the time to familiarize yourself with bookkeeping, web design, marketing, etc., so that you can successfully talk shop with anyone you're working with.
  3. Be kind and find enthusiasm in projects that you work on with your clients or services/ products you're giving to your customers. Be thankful for the support they give you no matter how big you grow.
