Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. D’Arcy Stonehouse, DC, and Dr. Erin Balodis, ND, co-founders of Brickyard Health, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a multidisciplinary health clinic offering a natural approach to health care. Our services range from manual therapy (chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, osteopathy) to naturopathic medicine, nutritional support, counseling, and physical rehab. We are a women-owned business and, collectively with our colleagues, support a diverse patient population, from athletes to the pre/postnatal community and everyone in between.

Tell us about yourself

Erin and D'Arcy both worked together for years in their respective fields. Their common interests led them to eventually open a clinic that supported their desire for patient-centered collaborative care. We are motivated by our patients every day. We love helping people find solutions to optimize their health.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As business owners, Erin and D'Arcy are proud of how much their team has grown over the years. They now have a total of 12 practitioners and four support staff, helping to serve the local community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Navigating a health team through the pandemic has been our greatest challenge thus far. Ever-changing practice guidelines, PPE, closures, and scheduling have been time-consuming over the past couple of years. We will forever be grateful for the support of our amazing clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

We invested in entrepreneurial courses and business plan development. We outsource when we need it; as experts in the health field, we rely heavily on our accountant, legal counsel, and marketing firm to help us get off the ground.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A good family friend gave us the quote that said, "leap, and the net will appear." We were lucky to have some amazing practitioners early on that supported our vision. If you build a supportive environment, you will attract the right people.
