Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian MacDuff ("BMAC"), a YouTube creator, on-camera personality, cinematographer/photographer based in Durham, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is an online film/photo, tech, and lifestyle brand that creates multimedia content to cover some of today's hottest products and services. My customers are viewers of this content across several social media platforms who share similar interests in the same categories.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business as a single-member LLC 5+ years ago. When I couldn't get hired as a content creator in NYC after applying to 20+ open positions, I decided to take matters into my own hands and dedicate what I've learned in my film, photo, interactive media, and business education to creating my own online media brand and personality - thus allowing myself to create the same content that I was originally applying to have someone else pay me to do. With my social media following and analytics a major indicator of my business's current state of success, upping my numbers and constantly improving my content (and analytics, as a result) is what motivates me each and every day to continue to create the content that I love and that others find helpful, informative, and entertaining!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Becoming financially independent! Once I started to generate enough revenue to support my business and personal life, the other aspects of my business fell into place, and it has continued to grow exponentially ever since.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Completing many tasks yourself. As a single-member LLC with an online media personality as my business, I serve as the Creative Director, Producer, Editor, On-Air Talent, Accountant, Secretary, and MORE! Outsourcing is a great option if you can find the right fit for the job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait to get started. The hardest part is getting your feet off the ground. If you wait too long to execute a launch perfectly, you may never launch it at all!
  2. Don't be afraid to try new things. It can help you learn what works and what doesn't, allowing you to focus more on what does work!
  3. Web search, web search, web search. If there is any aspect of your business that you are unsure about or unfamiliar with, it is amazing how quickly and easily you can often get the answer to your questions by running a simple web search. That's where I've learned nearly everything I needed to for my business.
