Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brenda Liew, Owner of Brenda Liew Online Pte, Ltd., located in Singapore.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide an online subscription-based membership platform for dancers worldwide to provide them with hundreds of technique-oriented classes and dozens of training programs specially designed to help our students grow as dancers - by training smart from their houses or comfort spaces, no matter their current level.

Tell us about yourself

I have been dancing since 7, and I set up my own dance company in Singapore in 2015. However, it wasn't until the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 that I founded Brenda Liew Online (with my fantastic business partner) that my capacity to reach and help students from all over the world exploded beyond anything I could have dreamt of by just giving physical classes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It is definitely to be able to help all my students from around the world with my knowledge- to learn the proper dance techniques that will empower them to become the best versions of themselves as dancers while positively impacting their mental health by creating joy with this shared passion. Dance is such a healthy hobby for our physical and mental health!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a small team behind Brendaliewonline and without any budget to hire more people when we first started, covering areas of running the business outside our expertise was highly challenging!

When we first dived into this business model, we needed to gain relevant experience running an online platform, editing videos, social media marketing, and many more! It took us a lot of trial and error, YouTube tutorials, and too many hours of practice until we could be where we are today. But it was all worth it. :)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it with passion.
  2. You must be genuinely in love with what you do so that you can be sincere with what you offer.
  3. Stay ready to keep improving/evolving the business, not just for you but for the sake of your customers first.
