Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tracy Balash, Founder of Brave Birds Studio, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Brave Birds is a leadership, team-building, and executive coaching practice serving Fortune 500 companies, municipal governments, and not-for-profits that support causes close to our hearts.

Tell us about yourself

One simple question from my executive coach. "What do you want your personal legacy to be?" After 30 years as a broadcast journalist, professional communicator, and public service administrator, I had never been asked that question. I had turned 50, my mother had passed away, my star in government was waning, and I knew it was time for a shake-up. I was obtaining certifications as an executive coach, MBTI administrator, and a core skills practitioner of Conversational Intelligence, and putting these new skills into practice while still in government, and I knew what my next step would be. The joy of helping others achieve new insights into their personal and professional growth is beyond fulfilling. Our team has helped individuals and groups navigate toxic environments and emerge stronger, healthier, and more productive. I am inspired and motivated daily by healthy transformations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building relationships and changing people's lives. We are not a 'one and done' consulting company. Our client relationships are sacred to us. We build a foundation of trust and frequently communicate in follow-ups and/or because the client is looking for something new.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being an introvert and everything that comes with introversion.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Recognize where you struggle and ask for help. I have a network of professionals who help me promote the business and hold my feet to the fire.
  2. Be bold. I gave up a high-paying job and a golden pension plan to start Brave Birds, but I have never been more personally or professionally fulfilled.
  3. Innovate. The world is constantly changing. Be agile and responsive to change.
