Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Bradford, owner of Bradford Bakery, located in Mckinney, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I do custom cakes and desserts made to order for all my clients. Everything is customizable for their events or dietary needs and made with attention to detail. My customers are those that have found out about us locally and want that personal touch added to their special events or even just want a treat made with love. They appreciate that we are personal with our clients and pay attention to their needs every step of the way!

Tell us about yourself

I have been working in restaurants for 15 years, always with the goal of working for myself. I had amazing opportunities to work on exciting projects and talented people. My favorite event I ever had the pleasure of being a part of was making the Dalai Llama’s birthday cake. When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted my daughter to see she could do anything she set her mind to, so I was motivated to take the leap and go out on my own. It was the best decision o ever made.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is honestly watching the build of the business and growing the loyal customer base. I have come a long way in a short time, and it’s a great accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being on top of following up with leads or clients is sometimes challenging because people don’t always follow through or decide to go another way but don’t be discouraged! No’s can turn into yes later, or there are always other opportunities.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find all the free marketing you can to put your name out there.
  2. Get to know your community! I do giveaways and meet neighbors and local people, so they develop trust in me first!
  3. Don’t think you will explode overnight! Slow and steady wins the race. If you are consistent, it will pay off!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I truly love what I do, and I love giving the extra personal touch to my clients so they feel special and an experience they can’t get with just any bakery.
