Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kim Gouch, Co-Owner of Box On The Rocks™, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Box on the Rocks™ is an easy and fun way to make home bartending an educational and memorable experience. Each Kit is curated to make three different cocktails. Two with Spirits and one as a Mocktail. All kits come with an expert Bar Tool so the recipient can begin building their Bar Tool cabinet while learning how to make Classic Cocktails from our monthly offerings. Our customers are adventure seekers looking to learn a new skill while having fun building unique cocktail recipes.
Tell us about yourself
During the Covid lockdown, many consumers decided to get more adventurous with home bartending. To help answer the call, we developed Box on the Rocks™. We're passionate about creating unique Cocktail recipes and curating fun Kits. We aim to turn home bartending into a fun and educational experience.
Everyone can go to their favorite drinking establishment, but when they're home entertaining or just looking for a casual night in, we've supplied the tools, the recipes, and the ingredients to fulfill the home bartending need. Our Kits come complete with all the ingredients to make 10+ Cocktails. All the recipients must do is supply their own Spirits. Which we make recommendations within the recipes, so the guess has been taken out of completing the Cocktail Kit experience.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to start a business during one of the most difficult times in our history and sustaining supply chain issues over the last two years is a reason for celebration. Our business continues to grow as we expand our audience and adopt new e-commerce strategies. We're heading into our third year and right on track for year-over-year sales lifts with many more unique Kit innovations and experiences to come.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Hands down, it's keeping everyone happy. They say you can't make everyone happy, but at Box on the Rocks™, we strive every day to provide pleasant and memorable experiences. Staying ahead of trends and curating fun Kits for all demographics is a daily challenge but one of the most rewarding experiences.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Most importantly—do your homework—research your industry, your competitors, your audience, and the cost of doing business. Secondly, make sure you have the appropriate funding and human resources support. And lastly, it's imperative that new business owners have connections and understand the importance of employing those connections as they grow.
