What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called BowTie Medical. Our mission is to reduce the waste and cost of the healthcare system and improve the health of our members. Our customers are individuals and employers across the United States looking for healthcare.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on the business model in 2012 when I was serving on the board of a major hospital system. I realized we had built a sick care system and, ironically, expected health care outcomes from it! I founded BowTie Medical to create systematic innovations for bringing efficiency and value to the healthcare delivery system. I wrote the Health Guardianship book this year to explain my vision.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The creation of a model named "health guardianship' that would remedy the current sick care system without requiring an act of Congress!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

How to translate one's ideas into services or products that people would buy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with a big, audacious goal that would make the world a better place.
  2. Short of a great big idea, the difficulties of establishing and running a business may prevent you from accomplishing your goals.
