Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tawn Le, Owner of Boundless Nest, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a mindful living business called 'Boundless Nest' where I provide 1-on-1 consulting & coaching called "Let's Get Organized!" to help people make time for their side hustle/passion project, create sustainable hand-rolled incense, and make accessible content on my Instagram that can support someone to live with more ease (even if that's me doing silly content to make them laugh).

The majority of business is my consulting and coaching private service, 'Let's Get Organized!'. Here I offer an integrative approach to help women, especially adult children of immigrants & BIPOC, make time and space for their side hustle or passion project. I offer this based on my own lived experiences as a child of refugees coupled with my former skill sets in corporate while trying to live my truth.

My customers are those who are looking to live more mindfully - they look for tools and techniques that can help them feel connected to themselves. This often looks like re-integrating the activities they loved doing as a child - painting, writing, cooking, hanging out with their friends, etc. Even if they are already familiar with these tools, they understand that mindfulness (aka awareness) is continued cultivation and practice. Those who work 1-on-1 with me often struggle with guilt and putting loved ones' needs before theirs. And as a result, they ignore doing the things that give them joy.

Often, it stems from a cultural standpoint where I'm able to understand the nuances of it and relate because I've gone/still go through with it. From this perspective, we can address the root cause that may prevent them from moving forward to, as we say, 'doing the damn thing!'

Tell us about yourself

I'm an ex-Amazon employee and have worked at some of the largest global advertising holding companies for years. I took an 'adult gap year' in 2018 to travel and figure out what I really wanted for myself, and that same year my Dad died.

His death was the thing that made me decide that I would never work a 9-5 job without a job that year because I had a chance to spend a lot of my time with him before he passed. That was the reason that drove me and still is the same reason that drives me: that experience taught me that I never wanted to miss moments with loved ones and that I wanted to cultivate my relationships with the people I care about in this life.

For me, it was just a bunch of random events and past hobbies and skill sets that led up to Boundless Nest. I didn't have a roadmap to where I wanted to go, only the scenario I'd wished for. I wanted the option to leave work at any point I wanted to and have the time and space to spend with the people I loved.

The big moment (and the big moment for a lot of people) was the pandemic - I had a part-time job as a receptionist while still trying to figure it out and found myself without a stream of income. So I did what most people did; I broadcasted on Instagram ALL of my skill sets and hobbies and asked if anyone would pay me for any of it. And they did! From there, I just kept going until I started to narrow down, and here I am today.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's pretty simple; I'm just proud that I GET to run my own business for the last two years and that I'm able to dictate what I want to do. I think that's a tremendous accomplishment for me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Because I'm self-employed, I don't have the luxury of coworkers to bounce ideas off to or just have those fun social breaks throughout the day.

But I've found that having a relationship with other business owners like myself has been super helpful in terms of just releasing frustrations and also learning from one another. I also joined a group business coaching program that has been super helpful as well in learning how to run a business rather than just continue to figure things out for yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know why you want to start a business, just start, and find a mentor/community.
