Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amber Stevens, Owner of Boundless Body and Wellness, located in Arvada, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I opened Boundless Body and Wellness to support others in need of physical and emotional healing. We offer Massage Therapy, Health Coaching, Acupuncture, Energy Therapy, Trauma Touch Therapy, Yoga, and Wellness classes. We see everybody and every body, from teens to seniors, athletes to desk jockeys - all are welcome.
Tell us about yourself
I love my work and my business! Helping others to feel better and live well is all the motivation I need to start my day and keep thriving. I left the corporate world in 2007 to start my practice in massage therapy. It's been an amazing journey, first focusing on athletes and sports massage, then expanding with prenatal massage, and finally adapting an integrated therapeutic style to help those with acute and chronic pain conditions or just wanting to relax deeply.
In 2017, I furthered my skills and expertise as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Mindful Eating guide (Board-Certified in 2020). Recognizing my own struggle with emotional eating and how I helped myself to recover, I authored a book: Food, Feelings and Freedom: The End to Emotional Eating. Now my health coaching focuses on cultivating awareness around personal food and health struggles to learn how to make informed and beneficial choices for overall wellness.
Finally, in January 2022, I opened Boundless Body and Wellness, hiring staff and expanding to offer truly integrated care and community wellness classes. We also team with local artists to showcase their work in our healing space. I'm so pleased to give others the time and space to heal and to be a part of their well-being.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm most pleased by the amount of trust cultivated in my clients and my staff. This business is not just a career; it's an outreach of a loving heart. We are sharing and spreading compassion with deep care for our client's health and improvement. Likewise, I am intent on creating a work environment where staff love to work and feel supported in their growth and capabilities. I feel most accomplished when clients and staff say, "I just love being in this space."
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Wearing all the hats. I have consultants and support to help with areas outside of my expertise (like web design), but I am still the HR manager, the therapist, the janitor, the receptionist, the marketer, and more. Some days I love the change of pace, but others just feel challenging and exhausting. Having a deep sense of purpose and loving my work makes it easier to face the hard moments and know that, with growth, I will eventually be able to hire more support. For now, I just keep breathing and doing the doable step every day.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on your joy - know where you thrive when you are working and grow your business in that direction.
- Don't be afraid to shift course. When I first started my practice, I was convinced that I would have a happy, little practice working with athletes. But that wasn't my true joy, and I felt called to something bigger. Following my joy and making the shifts when needed have led me to an amazing business.
- Hold boundaries that matter to you. People will push "for more," and life will throw up challenges and obstacles. Recognize what matters to you, what values you hold dear, and keep them as a priority in your life. Work/life balance is never equal, but boundaries help it to be achievable and accessible. Take care of yourself, so you can better care for others.
