Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gabriela Castro, Founder of Botko Foods, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is crafting plant-based snacks selecting only nutritious ingredients that will allow you to attain health goals with ease while enjoying delicious flavors. Our products are sourced non-gmo and made with healthy fats, fiber, and protein. Our customers are those looking for great taste in a guilt-free snack, those who seek to make the right choice for their minds and bodies and want to bridge themselves into plant-based, more sustainable choices.

Tell us about yourself

I began developing recipes that would fulfill my need for delicious, healthy options. Creating crackers w grain-free, satisfying crunch, and non-dairy cream and cheese. I couldn't find anything on the market that didn't have added sugars, dairy, grains, or inflammatory seed oils. It brings a smile to my face to know that families can enjoy our nutritious products and that I can make a change in the food industry by introducing satisfying yet anti-inflammatory foods at the same time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've gathered a beautiful, talented team that has worked hard to make our products accessible to consumers. We've participated in several Natural food expos and love to be a part of local communities through Farmer's Markets. We've sold in retail stores like Erewhons, Boney's Bayside, Seaside Market, and others. We are in the midst of relaunching on e-commerce platforms such as AMAZON, Walmart, and our direct website, botkofoods.com.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Understanding the learning curve of a new industry and achieving good timing for things to come to fruition.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with experts you can learn quickly from.
  2. Make sure to be financially backed up.
  3. Only do a business with a purpose so you can enjoy every step of the way.
