Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amber Allen, owner of Bombshell OC, located in Laguna Niguel, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I design, manufacture, and source products mainly in the health, beauty, and home goods industry. I have customers such as Fabfitfun, Boxycharm, Access Hollywood, Wendy Williams, Rachel Ray, etc.

Tell us about yourself

I got my start in the beauty industry as a Master Cosmetologist doing hair, makeup, and skincare. I started working for a haircare company a mere six months into being licensed and got to travel the world learning, teaching, and training others. I learned the business not only just behind the chair but also had my hand in product development, where I gained skills in logistics, sourcing, and formulating. I have taken that knowledge and created many different brands and products. I have developed three different teeth whitening brands and working on a cosmetic color line now. I love meeting new people and helping new customers bring their products to life!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to provide a stable income so that I was able to leave an abusive relationship and also provide help to my family who is in need.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me that comes with being a business owner is walking away from a deal when it only benefits my customer but not myself. I have always done the deal, even when it has hurt me financially trying to secure a better relationship with a customer. I have had to learn to set boundaries in work and personal life. I give respect to others, and I have learned that by setting boundaries, I can align myself with customers who will mutually respect me and not just take.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor, maybe even more than one!
  2. Be willing to do what it takes, even if you have to do things you don't like (like social media for me- struggle bus!)
  3. Sow seeds! You reap what you sew, so get to planting in other people's lives and businesses as well!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My business has allowed me to continue to work through brain tumor and surgery, through recovery, and now relapse of the tumor returning. I am so grateful for the love of my customers and clients, who have shown great love and support to me through this journey!
