Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then check out our interview with the florist, Alison Down, owner of Boho Flowers, in lovely Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to where you are today...

I have always loved flowers and gardens, I studied to be a garden designer initially, but after meeting a lady at a market selling seasonal British flowers, I decided I wanted to go down this route. I love the different flowers that come as each season closes and another one opens. I love seeing the seed grow into beautiful flowers. And importantly, British flowers are local and have a very little negative impact on the environment .. they are grown not flown!!

What motivates you each day?

I love flowers! In Britain we are lucky we have defined seasons, every season is different. So every day is different. Some days I can be digging out beds, the next day I’m helping create a client's dream wedding.

What makes your flower business stand out?

I grow only seasonal flowers, from the showstopper tulips kick-starting the season off to the big and blousy dahlias in Autumn. Our flowers are naturalistic and the bouquets we create are more naturalistic in style. We use grasses and seed heads and extend the seasons with the flowers with have dried throughout the year. Our customers are people who are worried about the impact of the floristry business on the environment, as well as customers who embrace seasonality and live the more natural style.

What's been your biggest accomplishment to date as a business owner?

In my earlier years as a garden designer, I had a small show garden at Hampton Court flower show. Since setting up Boho flowers I think it simply is that the florists who buy from me now trust my flowers they give me a color palette and texture palette and leave me the freedom to curate the buckets of flowers. When they collect they are always excited to see what they have this time !!
