Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittney Bogues, Founder of Bogues Group, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bogues Group is an award-winning black woman-owned communications and event planning consulting agency providing custom solutions for national nonprofits, mid-sized corporations, public figures, and brands.

Tell us about yourself

My late mentor Sheila Stewart introduced me to the business of communication, and I fell in love fast. The storytelling, pitching, creativity, connecting with outlets, researching ideas -- it was safe to say I was hooked. 13 years later, it is still what motivates me each day the joy I get from hearing our client's story and bringing it to life through media or some form of communication or marketing tactic.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It is hard to sum up my biggest accomplishment as a business owner, we recently received a PRSA award and CBJ Top 25 Women in Business, but I am just proud that my team is growing along with my business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner, especially if you do not build a community, is sometimes the hustle and feeling like it's you against the world. Until you build your team and or have a solid right hand / build your community as a business owner, it can be an arduous journey.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top tips for anyone looking to start, run and grow a business in today's market are to:

  1. Remain teachable.
  2. Be flexible.
  3. Know your numbers.

If you stick by those three, you will be able to grow, scale, and reach levels beyond what you've ever imagined.
