Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Julie Doobay, owner of BodyMind Wellness Studio, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At BodyMind Wellness Studio, we believe that what’s going on in your body is a reflection of what’s going on in your life. My practice focus is NeuroStructual Optimization, ensuring that your body and brain communicate and function optimally via gentle touch chiropractic.

Tell us about yourself

I had always wanted to be a chiropractor, but in my final year of Chiropractic College (2004), I suddenly became very sick. I suffered a serious brain infection that left me paralyzed from the neck down. It would take me five long years to learn to walk, and I progressed from a wheelchair, walker, and cane. In 2010, I returned to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College to complete my 4th and final year. I graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic and walked down the aisle with my cane to accept my diploma.

Throughout my illness, I was told that I might never walk again, I was told that I wasn’t expected to survive, and I was flat out told that I would never be a chiropractor.

We each have the ability to overcome, to heal, and to grow. We are so much more powerful than we realize - sometimes, we just need a little reminder. It brings me joy when I see my patients feeling and experiencing their own power.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been a business owner for almost ten years! I was able to sustain my business despite Covid shutdowns and even the trucker’s convoy (my office is downtown Ottawa). My business being able to survive is a testament to my amazing patients. It provides me with the reassurance that I provide a valuable service.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You are responsible for everything. It’s great that you don’t have to answer to anyone, but you also don’t have anyone else to blame. :)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find people who are already doing what you want to do and ask them questions.
  2. Be patient - success rarely happens in the order that you expect.
  3. Believe in yourself!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Remember that you have greater power within you than what has happened to you.
