Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carolina Gil-Ortegon, Owner of BodyMind Pilates, located in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
BodyMind Pilates serves as a bridge between Physical Therapy and regular fitness for those recovering from injury, surgeries, or neurological challenges. We also provide athletic conditioning for professionals looking to reach the edge of their performance. Musicians, singers, dancers, figure skaters, and athletes, in general, are regular clients.
Tell us about yourself
As a professional dancer, I sustained several injuries, and through Pilates, I was able to not only recover from my injuries but enjoy an excellent quality of life after retiring as a dancer. The applied neurology of movement along with Pilates has allowed me to maintain my fitness level, energy, and stamina to teach my clients and maintain focus and concentration to run my business successfully.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest reward is to see our clients' bodies restore natural movement. To hear how they are now able to get back to work or are able to play with their grandchildren again or to see our dancers thrive injury free. Guiding our clients on how to achieve a pain-free life is our mission!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Understanding that not everyone can be helped. To bring change into a person's life can be scary, and not everyone is ready or open to it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Establish a clear vision and mission for your business and push forward with determination.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I would love for people to consider the idea that we humans are the summation of mind/body and spirit, and those three components are very closely connected. The healing power of movement is great and will reach beyond your muscles and ligaments. Exercise purposefully!
