Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jillian Barnes, Founder of Body by Jillian, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Body by Jillian is a wellness business focused on empowering women through personal training, events, and nutrition. I have another business that's launching in July called Jet Athletics. My friend Gigi and I were feeling stuck in one place and love to travel, so Jet is like a destination for wellness. We'll be offering travel-inspired on-demand workout classes that you can fit in your carry-on.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a personal trainer and fitness professional that believes fitness isn't just about the gym. I started lifting weights in college, and it completely transformed my confidence. I got my degree in nutrition and started training senior year of college. Helping people discover a newfound confidence in the gym that they can use in their careers, relationships, and personal lives motivates me. This is why it's not just about the gym. It's about everything outside of it that makes or breaks us. The gym is just one part of the equation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I just won Best Personal Trainer in Boston through Boston Common Magazine! That was a crazy moment. I also think consistency has been my biggest accomplishment thus far - without it, I wouldn't have anything!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Business is so up and down. I doubt myself every other second. The emotions are real, but when you believe in yourself, the highs feel so good!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top is consistency. There are so many times I would give up on myself and take my foot on the pedal... probably my only regret, haha.

Next, you have to stop thinking, literally. The more you think about putting yourself out there, the more it sounds like a bad idea. So...just do it. (Nike knows what they're talking about, haha).

Put yourself first. It shows if you don't take care of yourself (especially in the wellness biz). You have to give yourself the best to be the best. Drink your water, get your sleep, and do your workouts, which will enhance your productivity and business.
