Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in automotive but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Doug DeLucca, Founder & Lead Mechanic of Boca Auto Fix, located in Boca Raton, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Boca Auto Fix is an Asian and Domestic general automotive repair facility. Our customers reside primarily in Boca Raton, including Florida Atlantic University.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Florida native, residing in Boca Raton since 1983. While I have worked as a part-time mechanic since 1996, I pursued a career in IT upon graduation from Florida Atlantic University in 2005. After a 20+ year IT career at Citrix, I decided to take my passion to a new level by opening my own automotive repair center. Though I have been working in the vehicle-repair business for years, Boca Auto Fix is my first business venture. Over the years, I have progressively built my auto repair and diagnostic skills, including obtaining Master ASE certification. With today's vehicles becoming ever so dependent on technology, my technical background, coupled with my automotive diagnostic expertise, ensures I provide an honest and thorough repair of your vehicle. My motivation to do what I do comes from 1) the desire to provide for my family while teaching my daughter's the meaning of hard work and tenacity 2) to change the way people perceive the automotive industry by showing them that mechanics can be honest and fair while providing quality work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is being one with the community and providing an essential service.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being an owner is not knowing what you don't know. The unknowns are a challenge and, over time, come to light.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Buy a business if you can. Starting a business from the ground up is very challenging.
  2. Research, research, research. Be as knowledgeable as possible in your industry. Use every tool available to you, books, podcasts, youtube, Facebook groups, etc. Surround yourself with industry experts.
  3. Have a plan. Think 3-5 years out on what your goals on and work backward.
