Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Betthany (Beth) Thomas, CEO of BMT Coaching, located in Frisco, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is BMT Coaching, and my passion is helping busy women shed 30 pounds (or more) and keep them off forever without lifting weights or doing cardio. I do this by teaching them to harness the power of food through my signature consistency-focused coaching program, the BMT Breakthrough. I love to debunk common weight loss myths that aren't serving women so that they can find freedom with food. BMT Coaching serves women nationwide virtually. We also partner with fitness studios and physician practices to offer our programs to their clients and patients.

Tell us about yourself

I am the CEO of BMT Coaching, an American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA)-certified weight management specialist, AFPA-certified nutrition and wellness consultant, and a licensed pharmacist. BMT Coaching was born as my way of sharing everything I learned, both during my weight loss journey and in my work as a Pharmacist, to help women just like me lose weight - and lose it for the last time.

I started to realize that while moving my body during exercise made me feel good; it was the food that I was eating that was really making a difference on the scale. So, I started leveraging everything I'd learned about nutrition to lose weight — and I haven't looked back since. In fact, I not only lost the weight but kept it off for the past eight years and counting. Now, I'm blessed to be able to help women use food to their advantage so that they can hit their goal weight and stay there while thoroughly enjoying everything they eat.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2020, BMT Coaching was named by the American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA) as one of the seven black-owned health and wellness businesses that are changing the industry.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is learning to reframe your thoughts when you hear the word "no" from potential clients, partners, etc. There can be many reasons why certain opportunities don't work out, and many of them have nothing to do with you personally as a business owner. Realizing that will help you stay consistent and keep pushing forward during times of discouragement.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pray and keep trusting God, even when things seem hopeless. Handling all the responsibilities of managing your business and dealing with the numerous challenges of being a business owner can be overwhelming at times. I can truly say that my faith is the only thing that has kept me going as I've been building BMT Coaching.
  2. Identify your mission, values, and priorities as a business owner and remain true to them. Record them and keep them someplace visible so you can refer to them often and so that you never forget your' why.' This will help you on those hard days when you want to quit, or you're tempted to do something that may not align with your business vision. Remember that you have to believe in what you're doing to be successful. Your business should reflect your unique personality and style.
  3. Don't be afraid to adjust your prices accordingly for the valuable services that you provide. Realize that not everyone will be your client, and stay focused on maintaining a standard of excellence in everything that you do.
