Recovery and Wellness with Adam from BLV

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adam Quigley, Founder, and Owner of BLV Performance Therapy, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

BLV Performance Therapy was crafted from the philosophy to "Believe" in oneself, developing the acronym "BLV" -- "Be yourself, Love your body, and Value your passions." Created to support and manage the health and wellness of some of the world's biggest entertainers and artists, BLV instills belief in one's journey through hands-on therapy, movement, and holistic guidance from daily life to world tours. BLV Performance Therapy also contributes to the community through the planning and programming of "BLV in You" Injury Prevention and Performance sessions for underserved athletic populations.

Tell us about yourself

I've been around sports my entire life. From winning Maryland state championships as a Junior Olympic gymnast and Olympic Development Program (ODP) soccer player, I've seen a variety of triumphs and setbacks for myself and my teammates. I was first exposed to Sports Medicine when a gymnastics teammate of mine fell off of Pommel Horse and dislocated his elbow when we were around ten years old. Most people ran away in disgust, but I went right up to him to check if he was okay. You could say this was my first experience of "on-field" injury management! As I developed into the pro sports athletic trainer I've become, I've met various musicians, artists, influencers, and performers, who would ask me how to deal with their injuries, aches, and pains that were limiting their abilities and overall happiness. Noticing the consistent need for answers, I dove a bit deeper into these questions. This ultimately led to me working with entertainers. I provide injury management, workout programming, and wellness advice, such as nutrition and daily movement tips. I see the impact that is taking place the more people I see. Performers are on stage for longer and pain-free. Musicians feel that their vocals are not limited and have free range. Athletes return from injuries that they thought were sidelining them for the season. Had I simply thought, "that's someone else's problem" or "someone else will solve that issue," who knows if these incredible people would've reached this level of achievement? If it weren't for the trust that these beings have instilled in me to propel them to their best and open their minds to new activities, practices, and information, we'd still be where we started.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Many people do not prioritize their health and wellness. There's a common "bend and don't break" mentality with entertainment professionals these days. Because of this, I have treated many last-minute "I need to feel better tomorrow" patient scenarios that could've been appropriately managed weeks prior. Getting the person to feel better for their performance, on-set shoot, or game with such a tight turnaround is a great accomplishment for me. Once I work with the person, they see the importance of daily management to propel their lives and careers to success with the incredible demands of their craft. Because of this, people are now seeing the importance of early treatment of aches and pains to address injuries before it's too late. This development has been very impactful to the individuals that I've worked with.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I've come across as a business owner has known what the appropriate next step is with decision-making in the journey. Many of the programs, concepts, and actions I've developed and created have been based on my own findings rather than someone requesting this or that of me in a corporate setting. There's no particular "right" or "wrong" way of going about the business since literally everyone is a potential client. I've realized I just get to take action! Questions about pricing, marketing, and business plans are all based on my own experiences and market research. There's no road map from other Certified Athletic Trainers that have done this in the past. This means there's not a ton of guidance across the entertainment industry for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. What are you waiting for? The longer you wait, the higher the likelihood of talking yourself out of it and letting the passion go to waste.
  2. Solve a problem, and provide an answer. Solutions-based businesses seem to find success because of the demand. When you hold the keys to people's solutions, there's room for development, growth, and opportunity.
  3. Believe. Whether you believe in yourself, in your product, your clients, or in the staff around you, belief is a must to find any type of success. People don't want to work with a personal trainer who clearly doesn't take care of their own health or a tax accountant who is very unorganized and cluttered. So use the product you're selling, complete your own programs, and be a part of the culture your business creates. Don't just preach to the choir.
