Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music and audio products but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jon Pilbeam, Founder of Bluelight Tapes, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bluelight Tapes produces audio cassettes for independent musicians and record labels. We also act as a 'record label' and have released over 50 albums from artists all across the world.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a musician for most of my life. I was going on a small tour in 2016 and decided to make some DIY mixtapes to sell at the merch table. A few friends had asked me to make cassettes for them too... Through word of mouth, things slowly grew and grew to the place we're at now. Since 2016 we've released 54 albums, produced thousands of cassettes, and helped hundreds of artists get their music out into the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I always find a lot of joy in seeing our tapes in the hands of music lovers worldwide. Cassettes were once seen as a dying medium, and it is great to be a part of keeping that culture alive.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing when to stop. Working in an industry that you love often blurs the lines between work and play. It is easy to accidentally work yourself too hard when your work is fun.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go slow - Let your project grow organically, don't force it. Going 'all in' too soon can be costly.
  2. Ask questions - Most people will share information if you just ask.
  3. Be Proud - Even if times are tough, you should be proud that you're putting your time and effort into something you believe in.
