Handmade Boutique Of All Things Marbled - Blue Ivy Marbling

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts and crafts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Lagerwall, Founder of Blue Ivy Marbling, located in Eagle, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hello! My name is Jennifer Lagerwall, and I am a traditional Ebru artist. Ebru is a mesmerizing process of floating paints on a bath of water, creating a design using various tools, and transferring the design to a canvas such as silk, paper, or leather. I love to share and teach the experience of this art through workshops, events, and one-on-one instruction. I also create unique marbled products such as silk scarves, earrings, and leather clutches. Every item created with the marbling process is one-of-a-kind.

Tell us about yourself

Many years ago, I discovered the ancient art of Ebru and was quite intrigued. After searching for a way to learn more, I found myself in a class in Chicago where I was taught by a master Ebru artist, having no idea what I was getting into. I fell in love with the art and practiced for several years before discovering that water-marbling could be done on silk rather than just paper. That led to taking the art form on the road and providing a hands-on experience for customers, which led to opening a home-based studio and holding parties and special events. I now hold live sessions in the online space, create a course, and instruct virtually around the world. Introducing people to this unique art form, helping them create one-of-a-kind items made by their own hands, and seeing the wonder on their faces has been a joy. My mission is to cultivate creativity in others and bring people together to have fun!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been creating a sustainable business that provides enough income for me to stay home and be available for my kids. I can see so much potential and possibilities in what I've already created, and I am excited about the future and where my business will go.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sometimes it can be difficult to stay on task when you don't have someone to answer to. I find that if I set long-term goals and daily goals (planning my week out), it helps me stay on track and accomplish more.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You don't have to have everything figured out before getting started. Just jump in, and you will discover your next steps as you go.
  2. You don't have to be the very best at what you do or have the best product out there. The world is a large place, and you have something to offer. You can be successful if you are willing to put in the work.
  3. Be an encourager to others and show support. We can help each other reach our goals and dreams!
