Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Moji Igun, founder of Blue Daisi Consulting, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a writer, speaker, and the founder of Blue Daisi Consulting. As a sustainability consultant, my job is to help my clients find creative ways to reduce waste in pursuit of a more sustainable, just, and equitable world. So many of us want to know what we can do to make our world more sustainable. Our waste is an embodiment of the remarkable amounts of natural resources and labor embedded into the items we buy and consume. Blue Daisi offers accessible support to businesses that want to grow their sustainability practices by pursuing zero waste.

Tell us about yourself

I live in Seattle with my partner and our two cats. I love to garden, read, cook, and watch reality TV. I started my company because I wanted to make it easier for small businesses to practice the world they want to see on a small scale. Now, I talk about trash for a living because it's a tangible way to connect to our relationship with the world around us.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating a company that I'm proud of. I get to work on fun projects with wonderful people and see tangible results from my efforts every day. Through the process of getting this business off the ground, I've been able to design a life that I'm consistently excited about.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's really challenging to navigate the constant uncertainty. Even when things are going well, you can never predict how circumstances will change and how that will affect the way you can serve your clients and, ultimately, make money to keep things going. It's important for me to prioritize my personal well-being above all else, so I'm able to navigate challenges as they come.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, before jumping head-first into your idea, create a plan for how you will maintain financial stability. I remember creating a business plan thinking my business would be profitable, and paying my bills after a couple of months. Thankfully, I had saved somewhere between six and nine months of expenses to hold me over while I figured out that wasn't going to be the case. Secondly, make sure you have people in your life who you can run ideas by or will hype you up. It's critical to have people who love you and can be there for emotional support when things get tough, or you're feeling stuck. Finally, remember that good things take time, and your journey to "success" might look very different from others. Make sure you define what success looks like for you and stay rooted in that.
