Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in advertising but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Nichols-Jell, Co-Founder of Bloom Ads Global Media Group, located in Woodland Hills, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We own and run an advertising agency. Our customers vary from quick service restaurants to consumer goods, retail, and grocery.

Tell us about yourself

I love the idea of being involved in the growth of new and growing businesses. Because we work with so many different category verticals and are given the opportunity to manage hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising budgets, we are fortunate that we get to be a part of successful marketing campaigns. That part of the job is fun for me! Really seeing the fruits of your labor. It never gets old seeing a brand you represent on a huge billboard in Times Square, as an example.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The advertising space is ever-evolving, so I would say my biggest accomplishment would be evolving as a business and continue providing training and growth opportunities for our employees. For any business to become and remain successful, it is very important that we, as owners remain open to change. Change is not always an easy thing, but it is very important if you want your business to have long-term success.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In this business, in particular, it is losing a client. Sometimes to no fault of our own, change in management as an example. Then we have to tell our team. I really don’t like having to deliver disappointing news. That is never easy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never be afraid of change or of trying a new way of doing something. Failure can be the best teacher.
  2. Even when it seems like there is no hope, just breathe and move forward. If you have a passion for what you are doing, there are definitely better days ahead.
  3. Make sure you stay aware of the finances. Even if you have someone in charge of your books, keep a close eye on money in and out regularly. In a very short time, if your books are not balanced, things can get away from you, which can be very bad for the fiscal longevity of a business.
