Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rosemary Rudrani Nogue, founder of BlissYoga, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach Svaroopa® yoga and meditation through weekly classes, workshops, and group meditations. These amazing yoga practices decompress your spine, opening tight spots, quieting your mind, and taking you to a peaceful/blissful place inside. You feel better while doing yoga, and this feeling overflows into the rest of your life. Your life may not change, but how you live it will change.

Tell us about yourself

I first started yoga in my twenties. I was already teaching yoga when I discovered Svaroopa® yoga. With the Svaroopa® practices, I wasn't working hard, yet my body and mind and more changed, opening me to a new awareness inside. After 23 years, it continues to offer deeper openings in my body, mind, and more. Because this yoga style was profound for me, I wanted to offer it to others. There is nothing else I would rather do. It is a win/win. I keep delving deeper and so do my students. Changing the world one yogi at a time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I help grow our Svaroopa® yoga community by supporting some students to become teachers and start their own businesses. More teachers grow the student base and create more awareness of this style. As far as I'm concerned, there cannot be too many Svaroopa® teachers. We can all support each other in our businesses. There are a lot of people who could do this yoga. Also, giving students local opportunities to attend workshops with the originator of Svaroopa® yoga and the leading teacher trainers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I love teaching and inspiring others and am glad to spend lots of time pursuing this. The hardest challenge for me is the administrative part of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on serving your customer the best way you know-how and not on the bottom line.
  2. Build ongoing relationships with your customers/students. Learn about important events in their lives. Care. For example, I contact a student if they miss a class to make sure everything is OK. This approach helps you maintain the customers/students you already have.
  3. Inspire and encourage customers/students to take the next step - for example, take a deeper class, attend a workshop, try meditation, or even become a teacher themselves. They keep learning and growing (and so do I). Svaroopa(R) yoga is an integral part of my life, and it has become an integral part of their lives. Lead by example.
