Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leanne Fitzgerald, founder of Bleu Charcuterie and Cheese, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Starting as a creative outlet, bleu charcuterie and cheese's mission is to artistically craft high-quality cheese and charcuterie boards to be enjoyed together with family and friends. We put together boards for our customers looking to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or baby shower as well as for friends looking to catch up during a night in.

Tell us about yourself

We've always enjoyed putting together a snack spread when hosting. This evolved into creating charcuterie boards for our family and friends. We've enjoyed spending time planning what we wanted to serve, looking at what is in season and what pairs well together. We have a love of photography and wanted to practice our food styling skills. Over time our friends and family looked forward to any party or holiday we hosted so they could enjoy our charcuterie boards. From there, we decided to turn this passion into a side hustle by launching bleu charcuterie. We are both creative people, and making art with food motivates us to continue.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting this business from scratch with no previous knowledge is our biggest accomplishment. It was a steep learning curve, but we've gained so much knowledge, experience, and confidence along the way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a small business owner is balancing everything. We both work full-time jobs and run this business as a side hustle. Some days it seems like we can't do it all, but changing our mindset to focus on the creative aspects helps keep us motivated.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Communication is key with your business partner.
  2. Don't get discouraged if you don't get a sale or the response you were expecting right away. Keep at it!
  3. Have fun!
