Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Williams, Founder of Blessed Beauties Inc., located in Detroit, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're a Beauty Supply with same and next-day delivery. Our Customer base is the busy stylist that has a strict schedule or the working family with limited time or knowledge of beauty or health products. We cater to our customer's individual needs and help guide them in the right direction while saving them time and effort. The beauty industry is continually evolving and changing. The constant changes in this industry can sometimes be hard on both the stylists to find products and the clients to find the right products that fit the trend and their hair types. BBI Beauty gives our customers guidance on what trends fit their individual hair. As well as supplies the stylist with the best quality products to service all hair types.

Tell us about yourself

The Beauty Supply Store is a huge part of the Black community. As a Black Woman, I spend a lot of time maintaining my extremely curly hair. In my experience, I've never seen or known of a Beauty Supply store that has knowledge of different hair types or how the products may affect the hair differently. I wanted to change the beauty supply shopping experience. It wasn't enough for me to just sit back and do nothing. I am the change I wanted to see, and that pushes me to keep going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The amount of growth that we've accomplished within the first year of being open is my greatest accomplishment to date. We're a fairly new company, but we've been able to build and maintain our inventory, increase our marketing budgets and help our community within the first year of being open and operating is a wonderful feeling.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner, you must be able to find a happy balance between business, personal, and family. Working full time, being a Mom, Wife, and working full time in the business has been difficult, to say the least.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research research research - Do your homework before you decide to invest your time, money, and energy.
  2. Find a tribe- Get a mentor in your field of business. Follow people on social media who may be farther along in the same field and network or purchase their books /products if they can help you. ( Look at the data of their success because everything that glitters isn't gold).
  3. Don't compare another business's Chapter 10 to your Chapter 1 or 2 - Don't rush your business progress to be like anyone else. You don't always know the struggle before a successful business story.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When our customers invest in our business, they not only help us serve underprivileged people and Families in Detroit, Mi, but you are helping us support other small beauty and wellness brands. Over 85% of the products we sell in our store are Owned by Black and multicultural Women or Family owned and operated businesses.
