Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in hospitality but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Ebel, Owner of Blakbar Tavern Inc., located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is in the hospitality industry. My clients include everyone from all walks of life who enjoy having fun and conversation in a safe environment. We offer great food, drinks, cocktails, and all types of events.

Tell us about yourself

I started in the nightclubs back in the mid-90s and have been in the industry ever since in many different roles. I took a 5-year hiatus to follow other paths but ultimately came back to open my own place, as that's always been my dream. My daily motivation is passion and the community I'm a part of due to opening the only alternative rock tavern in the area. So there is no option for failure.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment, I guess, would be that we are still around after Covid and the massive support from the community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Your own motivation to keep going. It can get depressing after a while since basically every day is dedicated to making the business not only survive but also thrive. The amount of work is definitely tough.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know and research as much as you can about the industry in which you are going into.
  2. Time management is crucial, as well as daily reminders of what needs to be done.
  3. Never give up.
