Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Donnell, Founder of Black Girl Budget, located in Tampa, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Black Girl Budget ("BGB") is dedicated to teaching black women how to use their budget to create financial success and financial stability. BGB offers free and tangible tips through The Black Girl Budget Podcast and has in-depth courses for one on one learning.

Tell us about yourself

I started budgeting in 2016 when I became a lawyer making $43,000 a year, getting paid once a month, and being anxious because I did not have emergency savings. Through my budgeting strategy, I was able to pay off over $25,000 in debt, save over $20,000 in my emergency fund, and invest over $15,000. Friends and family began to ask me how I was able to reach so many of my financial goals, and I shared the strategies I created. It made such a big difference to them to have someone they could talk to and get tips from about budgeting and creating financial goals. Every day someone reaches out to me and lets me know how much my work helps them, and it motivates me to continue the work of Black Girl Budget. My goal is to teach black women about budgeting so we can turn the financial statistics of black women on their heads.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is providing budgeting solutions to everyday financial problems that affect our goals, lifestyle, and financial success and stability through The Black Girl Budget Podcast and BGB courses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is balancing the desire to help everyone for free and to be a profitable business. I'd love to create free resources and provide free consultations, but I have to remember we're still a business. I work with non-profits and offer free speaking engagements from time to time to make Black Girl Budget as accessible as possible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips I would give to new entrepreneurs are:

  1. Do not compare your sales, partnerships, or collaborations to any other businesses in your field.
  2. Keep posting your products and services every day.
  3. Reach out to other businesses for potential partnerships and collaborations (get more eyes on your business).
