What's your business, and who are your customers?
Black Bexar (Béjar) Coffee is a service-disabled veteran-owned and operated boutique, specialty small-batch coffee company. We order and roast premium, high-grade, responsibly sourced specialty coffee beans that we import worldwide. We provide our Texas Honey Roast specialty coffee with eco-friendly gas and oil-free roasters in the Hill Country of South Texas! Tell us about yourself
I lived in Seattle, WA, and attended College at the University of Washington. I lived in the Pacific Northwest with really good coffee, and I knew people who roasted coffee. When I moved back to where I grew up in Texas, I could not find a decent cup of what I would call real coffee. So I decided to buy roasters and roast the beans myself, utilizing what I had learned in the Pacific Northwest from friends and colleagues on specialty boutique coffee.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Roasting great specialty boutique coffee that people love to drink with very low acidity and very smooth to drink. I am so excited that people can really taste the difference in really good artisan roasted specialty coffee.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The logistics of maintaining and ensuring a good quality product and maintaining a good streamline of fulfilling customers quickly and efficiently, minimizing the overhead and costs to run the business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Try to combine resources at the beginning, utilize your resources wisely and ensure you map out what you want to do before executing any decisions. Wait a day and sleep on it before taking action. It is okay to take calculated risks but use small and low-cost tests to get results before taking a big step in a direction because if you don't test before you take significant action, it may cost you significantly.
