Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health supplements but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with James Richard, Co-Founder of Bizi, located in Nashville, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Bizi is a nutrition company that was created to help people get their nutrition in a simple way! We originally created the company to help people with digestive issues have safe supplements to take. We did this by eliminating unnecessary fillers and using raw USA honey as the way to deliver the vitamins! Now we are trying to give everyone a tasty and transparent way to get their nutrients.
Tell us about yourself
My younger brother was diagnosed with Crohn's in 2016 and started using diet to alleviate his symptoms. While he was on this diet, he saw a great improvement in his health but still lacked micronutrients such as vitamin D3. When he went to supplement, many of the pills and powders contained ingredients that he was supposed to be avoiding in his diet. I noticed that one of the only sweeteners he could have was honey, so I decided that we should combine the pure nutrients with raw honey. Seeing the impact of nutrition firsthand has been amazing to me, and I want to give everyone the opportunity to get the nutrition they need!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Right now, we have expanded our line of products to become more inclusive of everyone. Recently we have expanded our products to include more than just vitamin-infused honey! We successfully have started a new line of products related to sports nutrition. In the past month, we have launched a creatine gummy that has really pushed the boundaries of the company to let more people discover nutrition and give people more options in the supplement world.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Starting a business right out of college was not something simple and is something that I struggle with daily. Many days there are 100 things to do, and then many days, there are 0 things to do. Part of that just comes with bootstrapping your business, and part of it comes from me learning through the experience since I haven't done anything like this before.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Always be asking questions. Whether it is to yourself, about your company, or about the industry you're in. Getting more info is always helpful and can actually help you define your product and business better.
- Listen to the customer. If you are creating a new product, you need to listen to what your audience is telling you. If they hate the product, but you keep trying to sell it to them, you might need to change audiences or products.
- Don't be afraid to ask other entrepreneurs for advice. Many times the entrepreneur community is more than willing to help. If you need it, ask someone for some help!
