Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John LaPolla, co-owner of Bitter & Esters, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bitter & Esters is New York City's only homebrew supply shop. We teach people how to make their own beer, and we carry all of the ingredients and equipment they'll need. Our customers are passionate about quality craft beer and do-it-yourself projects. Beer brewing is the greatest hobby because, in the end, it gives you a beer!

Tell us about yourself

I ran printing presses for over 20 years. During that time, I made my own beer; it was a great way to relax. When I decided it was time for a change, my friend and business partner Douglas and I opened Bitter & Esters in 2011. My customers keep me going every day. People are very happy to brew beer, and their passion helps fuel mine. It's a pleasure to help them, whether they are beginners or advanced brewers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That would be winning the American homebrewers association Homebrew shop of the year in 2019. I am also proud of my customers and former employees who have gone on to either open breweries or work in the craft beer industry. It's very satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Probably work/life balance. I love what I do, but at the end of the day, I need to focus on something other than work. I still like to drink beer after work though!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take business courses if you haven't already.
  2. Whatever money you think you need to start up, double it.
  3. Diversify your revenue stream as much as you can.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As challenging and rewarding owning a business can be, in the end, we are still here because of our wonderful customers. Without them, we wouldn't exist.
