Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Veronica Bishop, Founder of Bishop Content Studio, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bishop Content Studio is a one-stop shop marketing studio specializing in beautiful, clutter-free website design, copyediting, copywriting, and social media content creation for small service-based businesses. My clients are in what I call "the helping profession" - people who help people! This includes folks like professional organizers, designers, educators, coaches, therapists, contractors - you name it. If you provide a service, my business is designed to support you! From done-for-you marketing and websites to DIY support and training, my goal is to help solopreneurs and small business owners create an online presence that establishes how they help others to build trust and strong relationships.

Tell us about yourself

I started Bishop Content Studio after becoming a new mom. As a former Professional Organizer, I wanted to continue working with organizers and those who help others, but in a way that would allow me a more flexible schedule and to spend more time at home with him. In terms of motivation, it's all about my clients! When you work with clients, you love, respect, and enjoy, "work" is fun, interesting, and so, so rewarding. I absolutely love what I do, and it's thanks to them. If you aren't having fun, it's worth looking at your business roots and how you are attracting clients in the first place.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Without a doubt, my biggest accomplishment has been creating my amazing team! After a year or two in business, it quickly became apparent to me that if I wanted to maintain my client load, I would need to get some support. I had a lot of fears about hiring a team. I worried about finding the right people to fit my brand and style. In the end, luck, intuition, and great timing led me to the right people, and I am so incredibly proud of what we have built together as a team.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Real talk here. I think one of the hardest things about being a women-owned business owner is recognizing our own personal skills and abilities and charging what we are worth. Early on in my business, I had a coach tell me: "you're treating yourself like an hourly employee." And she was right. Even now, there are still days when I have to remind myself: you are a pro, and you are worth every penny. It's a learned mindset.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create quarterly goals.
  2. From your quarterly goals, break them down to create monthly and weekly goals.
  3. Create a daily task list for the next day and stick to it as much as you can. I've found that a well-run business is all about taking the big plans and breaking them down into bite-sized, daily pieces.
