Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suzanne Smith, Founder, and Owner of Biscuits To Baskets, located in Ajax, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are NOT just a gift basket shop! In fact, we are so much more; we believe in supporting the community by providing a service like no other. In our shop, you will find a few select makers, along with our offerings. What I myself love most is that our customers have the same in common; they are always telling us how keeping to small businesses and supporting small businesses by not buying from big box stores helps our family-owned businesses thrive.

Tell us about yourself

I started this business in order to be a stay-at-home mom and take care of my four children while doing what I love. Creating and making. I was buying locally made items to make baskets to sell at local craft shows, and gradually my interests peaked with chocolate, everything chocolate. Being a single mom at the time was not always easy. The kids were so patient. As the business grew, they believed in me and, along with my husband, encouraged me daily.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment, I would say, is surviving the ups and downs of the challenges that a business can bring. Lol 4 kids, and making it work.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest, oh boy. I’m Going to have to say getting through the pandemic. It was a scary time for a lot of small businesses this past couple of years.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research, and ask questions before you jump in.
  2. Respect others like businesses; competition is healthy, but be sure to stay in your lane and give credit when it’s deserved.
  3. Belong to the community, be kind and really get to know your customers.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Ooo yes! In the fall of 2021, my husband became a huge part of joining me in our business. We added an addition to our shop an espresso bar that serves all kinds of beverages, plus a selection of baked goods. Backyard Brew has now become a staple in our town.
