What's your business, and who are your customers?
Birth Matters NYC & East River Doula Collective provide childbirth & new parent education, doula support (for birth and/or postpartum), and other supportive offerings for expectant and new parents.
Tell us about yourself
I became passionate about being a birth changemaker back in 2009 on the other side of giving birth twice. Given the U.S. ranks at the bottom of the developed nations of the world in our outcomes for birthing people -- and has exponentially worse outcomes for Black & brown birth givers -- we clearly have a lot of work to do. I've been working ever since then to help growing families gain the tools, education, and support they need to have a healthier, happier, more fulfilling journey into parenthood.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Not sure of my "biggest" accomplishment, but a few things I'm proud of are creating a 15-hour online course, creating/hosting a podcast and keeping it running for several years now, birth advocacy/policy work, and being awarded "Childbirth Educator of the Year" by Childbirth Education Association of Metropolitan New York.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Having to do everything (at least at first) as a business owner -- not just be a teacher and doula, but also to do all the administrative, financial, marketing, and so much more facets of the work. And then, as the business grows and I've started to hire help, it's been very tricky to find the kind of help I need and grow into a manager role.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Slow and steady wins the race!
- Content creation & networking are key.
- Look for software tools to streamline efficiencies before hiring people.
