What's your business, and who are your customers?
Unique parent-child courses create a lasting connection between parents and children, fostering open communication, healthy relationships, and respect for oneself and others at every age and stage. Parents with children nine through fourteen years of age.
Tell us about yourself
I taught puberty and sex education as a school nurse, and I found once I sent the children home to talk with their parents, the discussion never happened. I felt the connection between parent and child, especially during the tween and teen years, was imperative, so that motivated me to start my own business. My motivation is each time I teach one of my classes, I overcome to the statement, "Nobody wants to talk about "it," meaning my classes demystify old shame-based taboos around puberty and sex.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In the twenty years, I've been in business, I've seen more than ten thousand parent/child couples and created a solid word-of-mouth-based business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, it's keeping up with the changing times in marketing and sales. Since I have a unique business model, I have to find creative methods to market my product beyond just word of mouth.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Make sure you have a solid business plan. Build connections and partnerships. A clear understanding of your demographics and how best to market to them.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Financial gains in business are great, but if you're not passionate about what you do, it's just a job. I've been in business for over twenty years, and I still love and am passionate about what I do.
