Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allegra Derengowski, owner of Birchtree Catering, LLC., located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Birchtree Catering is a woman-owned business in Philadelphia serving local, seasonal menus for social and corporate events. We thrive on unique events that don't overdo it on fluff but focus on sustainable, thoughtful choices.

Tell us about yourself

We started catering in 2008 to be the "anti-banquet caterer." We wanted to cook with whole ingredients from local farms and artisans that would make every dish an experience. As we've grown, the thing that motivates me to keep going is my amazing staff, who are a joy to be around.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing the company from the ground up, we worked hard for our success, starting out of our home, then using rental kitchens, and then finally building our own commercial kitchen, which we've had for the last ten years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Business ownership comes with a lot of responsibility, and it's hard to maintain the energy to hold all of that every day. I've found that I can handle the stress the best when I look everyone in the eye, take on problems head-on, and allow myself to make mistakes and learn from them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Stay focused on the big picture, delegate as much as possible, and respect everyone's time, including your own.
