Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taq Bhandal, Partner of BIPOC Executive Search, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an Executive Search firm that aims to increase the representation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) professionals in senior leadership positions. We primarily work with client organizations in Canada and the US that are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Tell us about yourself

Firstly, I'm a huge nerd. I love doing research and finding amazing, talented, and superstar professionals for all of my searches. I also really enjoy interviewing candidates, helping clients on their own EDI journeys, and being of service to my community. I'm motivated by our mission at BIPOC Executive Search because I rarely got to see people who looked like me in senior positions or as role models when I was growing up.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, it feels like the biggest accomplishment is creating a space for BIPOC professionals to be seen, heard, and cared for. Not only do I place candidates with our clients, but I also get to provide them with coaching around their own worthiness for executive leadership.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Ooof, this is a good question. The first two challenges that come to mind are self-doubt and attachment to a particular outcome. It's honestly more of the emotional and mindset pieces that are challenging than the strategy and operations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Release all attachments to the outcome and focus on your mission every day.
  2. Hire a business coach or money mindset coach.
  3. Create intentional time for reflection, healing, and self-development.
