Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jesse Dorman, Co-Founder and CMO of Billment™, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Billment™ is an effortless Invoice Management tool that seamlessly integrates with your accounting software to save you up to 50% in processing fees and up to 90% in reduced workload.

Tell us about yourself

I have a very diverse background in digital marketing. I started in the music industry, being a part of labels, publishing companies, e-commerce, entertainment, and advertising. Then went on to developing brands and creating product placement TV segments with big names like PageSix, Celebrity page, and Univision. After that went into finance and supply chain management for a national product development company. I had so much experience with helping other companies grow and have had dozens of side businesses'. I knew that one day when I stumbled upon the right idea, It would be something I would dive into head first and all in. I am motivated by helping people achieve their goals while at the same time growing my business, and I found the perfect opportunity to do so.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be that I worked on my current company "Billment™" for two years without any outside funding and was able to fund it through my marketing company, and then when the product was ready to go live, I was able to close my first round of funding for more than expected.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the biggest challenges personally is being mindful to always check my ego at the door and to make sure that my team feels fully supported and heard 100% of the time. I think a healthy work environment starts with the heads of the company. So personal maintenance and improvement are daily tasks that are the main priority so that my company can be as healthy as possible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand exactly the need you are filling in the market.
  2. Quality of life is for everyone, not just you. If you want a successful business, you need to create company standards that not only your team will follow but you as well. Also, you need to create perks that will incentivize your team to want to work harder. The more money the company makes, the more your employee can make and has room to grow.
  3. Make sure that the product or service you are selling is foolproof without trying to pull a quick one over people. Your product/service needs to be stellar and not average. Too many companies have great marketing, but the actual product is below par. That is why so many consumers are skeptical about sales in general.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As the saying goes, "life is short, so enjoy it." 100% of that is true, and the impact you have on your life and the lives around you IS important. We all have a choice on how we react, how we think, and in general live our lives, so make sure that the life you are living is of service and luminating the people around you, and I guarantee that you will be happy.
