Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jill Hamilton, Founder and CEO of Big Happy Family, located in Palm Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Big Happy Family is the destination for individuals who are building their families through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). We provide logistical, emotional, and financial support for anyone who is trying to have a baby through IVF, IUI, donor, or surrogacy.

Tell us about yourself

Previously the Head of Patient Experience for the largest network of fertility clinics in North America, I oversaw marketing, communications, social media, events, and philanthropic efforts. During this work, I recognized a chasm in the industry for true community in the fertility space that supported everyone. At the same time, my husband and I were undergoing our own personal struggle to have a baby. At home and at work, I was just constantly in the painful trenches of infertility. The idea that I could help just one person have a somewhat happier and far less stressful family-building journey is what motivates me every single day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think being able to connect individuals who are really struggling - emotionally, physically, and financially - with the guidance and community they need is hugely rewarding. When we got that first DM asking how to join and then being able to provide meaningful support and assistance, that felt like a big accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are a lot of hats to wear! I once heard the expression that you need to get all of the plates spinning in the air. Then, you can slowly improve each one and grow as best as you can. That's my approach, and it seems to be working so far.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I like to say that "TLC" is important:

  1. TALK about your business. Not only does it make it real, but it's good to practice your pitch and build your confidence.
  2. LISTEN to all of the feedback - the good, the bad, and everything in between. But also, take everything with a grain of salt.
  3. CARE about your customers. If you don't, you need to make some tweaks and find a new space. Audiences are smart. If you're not authentic, they can tell.
