Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Becky Feigin, Founder of BHF Digital Media, located in Arlington, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a business coach. I work with women entrepreneurs from just getting started in business to being around for a while but struggling to break through to the consistent five-figure/month mark. I take a three-pronged approach to business, focusing on mindset, energetics, and strategy. My strategy specialties are in marketing, sales, and messaging and my big focus is that I'm not about providing a blueprint for the strategies that worked for my business but instead focusing on finding the strategies that work for my clients.

Tell us about yourself

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be an entrepreneur. As a kid, I didn't realize that's what it was, but looking back, I always wanted to be the boss. I wanted to own my own horse farm, and then I wanted to create my own hotel brand and run that. For a while, I had this dream of buying homes, renovating them, and renting them out or selling them. In more recent years, prior to starting my business, my dream was to start my own social media agency. When I started my business in 2018, that was the trajectory I was on, but I quickly realized coaching and mentorship were more my speed. Honestly, as cheesy as it sounds, what motivates me is my clients. There is truly nothing that I love more than showing up every day to serve my clients and see them succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment would be bringing my business back up from the ashes in 2022. In 2020 I had my first six-figure year in my business, and I was on top of the world. In 2021 I closed even more sales within the calendar year, and I was so proud of myself. I walked into 2022, ready to break all my records and serve more clients than ever before, but 2022 had different plans for me. At the end of January, my grandpa passed, and it totally shook me to my core. Sales in my business completely tanked, and I realized I no longer enjoyed the programs I ran. I was tired of my business and had no idea where to go from there. I spent the first half of 2022 trying to figure out what my next step would be and how I would pivot. I was making enough to get by, but that was it. I was in a complete panic and had no idea how I would get back from it. I was actually even applying for jobs and was pretty close to giving up my business. And then I did the craziest thing; instead of giving up, I invested in a coach and gave myself 3 months. In those 3 months, I went from barely getting by to closing close to $30k in sales. I was so proud of myself. I made a complete 180 in my business, and now things are going better than ever because I love what I'm doing. That is my proudest and biggest accomplishment, for sure.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the pressure of being in complete control of the money that you make. In some ways, it's a complete blessing because, to a degree, there's no limit to the money we can make. And in other ways, it's truly the hardest thing ever. There is so much pressure to perform, so you can provide for yourself (and sometimes for your family), and it can be pretty overwhelming. I don't like to say business is all about money because it's not, but the reality is that in life, we need money to survive, and when we underdeliver, we can't provide for ourselves. That's a lot of pressure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure that you're starting a business you're passionate about. Don't just start the business to become rich because being an entrepreneur is no walk in the park, and it's honestly not worth it if you don't love what you do.
  2. Prioritize mentorship. Getting support in your business is like using Google Maps to reach your destination. You won't get lost, and you won't waste any time.
  3. If it's your passion, never give up. It's worth it to continue to fight for.
