Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kate Hlavac, Co-Founder of Beyond Measure Fitness Training, located in Naperville, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Beyond Measure Fitness Training is a 3500-square-foot semi-private personal training facility in Naperville, Illinois. We aim to make the personal training model more accessible for our community by splitting our sessions with up to 6 different people per session. This also allows members to enjoy their sessions and make friends during a time and age when it can be difficult to find community. Our goal is to build a strong, healthy, and confident community through care, connection, and coaching. We work with all age ranges and genders, but have found our niche is the women over 40 age group.

Tell us about yourself

I'm currently 33 years old and started the business with my husband at 22. I have always enjoyed movement, athletics, and fitness, but I realized I held a passion for helping people when I gained a lot of weight due to PCOS in high school. By college, I had plans to become a lawyer, so I majored in Organizational Communication and Political Science and worked for a law firm all through college. I realized that I enjoyed law, but it was not my passion. My husband and I shared a love for fitness, and the business was born. I quit my steady law job and took a leap to start a business. Knowing every day, I can help someone become more confident and strong and repair their relationship with fitness and movement is what motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is making it through the pandemic as a business, all while continuing to help people during a time when many were struggling mentally and physically. It felt good to have a platform and place to help people get through an extremely challenging time.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It can be challenging to juggle being a wife, mother, homemaker, and business owner. We have a lot of schedules!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pay yourself first.
  2. Outsource as much as you can for things that you are not so good at.
  3. Know that balance as an entrepreneur does not exist, but you can stay grounded through routines that can help you feel more in control of all the things that need to be accomplished each day.
