Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Beverly Chick, Artist & Art Teacher of Chick Artistic Creations, located in Boise, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Chick Artistic Creations; I make all my own art products which include fine art that focuses mainly on animals, nature, landscapes, and sometimes portraits. I create and sell multiple art products, including hand-painted rock animals, hand-made books, and even Steampunk/Victorian-style jewelry. I also offer services such as custom portraits and teaching art classes.

Tell us about yourself

In the late 1990's I became very dissatisfied with my secretarial career. That motivated me to start my own part-time business doing what I really had a passion for, which was creating and selling my artwork. Ever since I was a teenager, I have always had a strong interest and passion for art, and that just seemed to increase as I got older. I get a great deal of satisfaction from creating art and crafts, and I find it very therapeutic.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to take my business from part-time to full-time has probably been my biggest accomplishment; it took decades to get to that point, and it didn't happen until about eight years ago when I was finally able to retire from office work.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Marketing and having consistency in sales has been the most difficult thing for me. Understanding computer technology has also been challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research on how to run your own business & make sure you know what you are doing.
  2. Make sure there is a market for your business.
  3. Make sure you can afford to be a self-employed entrepreneur & don't fall into excessive debt.
