Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Betty Lam, founder of Betty Glam Boutique and a content creator, located in Thornhill, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I actually do a few things (what can I say - I have too many interests and hobbies!). As a solopreneur, my two main businesses are:

  • A Toronto Ladies Fashion E-boutique called Betty Glam Boutique.
  • I am also a Digital and Influential Content Creator on Instagram.

Betty Glam Boutique was created for ladies who love to stand out!
Assembling an outfit is similar to selecting your social armor - and dressing up in formal wear or even a power suit can positively affect your confidence. We specialize in cocktail dresses, occasion wear, bandage, body-con dresses, jumpsuits, and power suits/blazer dresses. I am all about finding pieces that help and encourage women to feel sexy, confident, and feminine!!

The people who come to me or shop from BGB are normally shopping for special occasions - i.e., birthdays, anniversaries, pageant competitions/interviews, launches, weddings, engagement parties, photoshoots, and so much more.

As a Digital and Influential Content Creator, I love supporting and promoting local as well as brands that align with my values and beliefs! The people who inquire about my services for partnerships/campaigns/collaborations are business owners, companies, or Marketing / PR Agencies. I have worked with industries, mainly Beauty and Fashion and technology (i.e., apps) and the Hospitality industry.

Tell us about yourself

Betty Glam Boutique - I started BGB in October after quitting my first full-time job without applying for another one. I studied fashion and live and BREATHE fashion - and after helping my previous boss with her e-commerce businesses, I thought perhaps it's time to start something on my own! I wanted something to call MINE - at the time when I quit, I didn't know what that "thing" was .. but I was excited to go all in, focus on myself and figure it out.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have always been passionate about the empowerment of women, and I want to continue to use my platform to support, celebrate, uplift women and encourage them to be the best version of themselves. I have been fortunate enough to be now paid generously for the work that I do - I feel as though this is just the beginning!!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult parts about being an entrepreneur and business owner is taking everything on yourself when you are first starting out. I find myself constantly brainstorming/coming up with new ideas, working on multiple projects at once - and because of that, sometimes there can be a lack of focus.

I am someone who always wants to do everything - but I have to remind myself that I do not have all the time (and energy) in the world, so it is OKAY to take breaks or turn down a project.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For those starting out or interested in becoming an Influential Content Creator :

  1. Receiving free products is nice - in the beginning, while you are building your brand and media kit. This is something I also told myself - your time is valuable, and you cannot keep working for free to help other people make money! Know your worth. Never be apologetic for charging premium rates and not offering discounts. I am all about content creators getting paid. SO NEVER be afraid to negotiate when it comes to working with brands.
  2. We are constantly bombarded with images of aspirational women on social media who seem to be doing far better than us. Being ambitious. Focusing on self-improvement and admiring others for their success is a great thing! But when you start comparing yourself to others in an unhealthy manner - it can be damaging to your self-esteem. And social media is NOT reality. Everyone's journey is different, and someone's middle is nothing like your beginning.
  3. TRUST yourself and your vision! Everyone starts with a small dream - you might face criticism or too many outer voices telling how starting your business may be too difficult or not a good idea. Don't let other people's doubts decide your potential or hold you back. NO ONE knows your plans and vision better than you - you are your biggest advocate!
So keep going - you've got this!

PS. If the people around you are not supportive / don't believe in you...
Find yourself some like-minded female entrepreneur friends online or in-person who will likely understand your journey (there are plenty of local Facebook and Online Networking groups that offers support and tips for Entrepreneurs :)).
