Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Beth Drayer, Owner of Beth Drayer Movement, located in Redondo Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Movement Therapist. I help people who have aches and pains reduce their pain, so they can move better and feel better. Most of the people I work with are active aging (and a lot of pickleball players).

Tell us about yourself

I am a Certified Athletic Trainer. I started off working in Division I athletics for many years, working with their athletes to prevent and rehabilitate injuries. After a while, I saw a huge gap in the general population who don't have access to someone like me. You don't need to go to the doctor first to come to see me and get a referral. If your back is tight, you don't really need a doctor to tell you that; you just need someone who knows how the body works and what will help relieve that tightness... that's what I do! Helping people motivates me! I work with the BEST people! Seeing someone in pain and how it affects their life and then seeing them out of pain and how they thrive is amazing! Really no better feeling... and that is anyone from an athlete with an injury to John or Sally who sits too much at work!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly that I'm still in business! Most small businesses have to shut down within the first three years! I'm just over the four-year mark and am stoked!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, wearing all the hats! I am the marketer, the finances, the practitioner, the one answering the phones and inquiries... seriously doing ALL the things! But that also means that no two days are alike! I need variety, or I get bored, so it actually works well for me!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be ready for the ups and downs because you will for sure have both; embrace both! You learn so much from them!
  2. Don't let off the gas when things are going well; celebrate and enjoy, but keep going!
  3. This is an exercise in personal growth as well as business, be ready to take a hard look at yourself as a person and a business owner; it can surprise you sometimes!
