Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bernadette Chin Lee, a digital marketing strategist based in Morton Grove, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Family-owned and operated. Business owners who have an active plan to grow to 3 million+ in sales while maintaining 20% or more in profits. They believe online marketing will improve their brand awareness and revenue growth. They don't have the time to oversee another project. They want simple reports that reveal profitable advertising and organic campaigns and the average value of customer purchases. And eventually lifetime value of each customer.

Tell us about yourself

I retired from my business at 50. Half of our seven kids were in College and beyond. At this time, I was homeschooling 2 of our children. I read a lot of books on parenting and realized I taught myself the art of persuasion (marketing). It took me a decade of colliding into unseen walls and falling into many pits. I was on the right track but missing the solutions that matched my personality and time availability. My aim was to find a marketing solution that delivered big results within 3 - 5 months of working together. The simpler the marketing strategy, the happier I am. My family motivates me. We feed off each other's energy. We check up on each other constantly. The idea of a happy client who refers me is my motivation to find more profits in your marketing strategies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I watch my children push past their struggles without complaining. My first business is always our children. My ability to take care of my family while servicing clients.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of a solopreneur's business is dedicating time to client-getting activities. This highlights the need for only simple marketing strategies that delivers the fastest results.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in yourself. Read books, buy courses, and put the advice into action.
  2. Find the market that wants what you sell BEFORE you invest in a product that no one buys.
  3. Get consistent sales. Your brand will fall in place.
