Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ina Lau, founder of Belly & Bloom®, located in Hong Kong, China.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Belly & Bloom® helps postpartum women by providing at-home Jamu Postnatal Treatment to grant the body a complete recovery physically & mentally. I'm a CIBTEC-qualified Jamu Postnatal Treatment Therapist and a Reiki second-degree practitioner.

Tell us about yourself

I first started my career in the beauty, health, and wellness industry in 2000. I always enjoyed helping women to feel good and pretty about themselves & learning new skills from time to time. In 2018, I traveled to Bali for vacation and trained a new skill with traditional Jamu Postnatal treatment. When I returned, I started providing treatments to friends & family who had given birth. Belly & Bloom® was created a few months later. My business is not just about helping postpartum women reshape their waistlines. It is a holistic healing for them to connect body, mind, and soul, to take a deep breath and relax. At-home service for moms to take time out of their busy schedule to embrace the benefits of Jamu massage to rest & recover.

What motivates me every day is simply looking forward to seeing my client's smile after waking up from a 60-minute treatment & also the results from Jamu's postnatal treatment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I always believe referrals are the most effective and powerful way to grow a bodywork business. Creating a successful massage referral program to recruit new customers is one of the biggest accomplishments of a business owner. The most important is I enjoyed my work a lot being part of my clients' postpartum recovery journey.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges is having various skill sets. Working on marketing, creating content for accounting, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Starting a business. Do your research before creating a brand.
  2. Running a business. Keep up the service quality, and do not undersell your service.
  3. Grow a business. Maintain a relationship with previous clients, and send them hand-written Christmas cards or little (Mother's Day) gifts so that they remember you!
