Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bianca Cotton, Founder of Behind the Confident Smile, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Behind the Confident Smile is a lifestyle and personal development company inspiring women and girls to walk in love, live in hope, and be healed from past hurts, utilizing the vehicles of workshops, seminars, and educational materials to propel women and girls into purpose.

Tell us about yourself

I started Behind the Confident Smile in 2017, shortly after my daughter was born. I began blogging to encourage women to heal from their past hurts because I've experienced looking in the review mirror of life. I know firsthand how it can keep you stuck and hinder your progress in life. Writing has been a vehicle for my healing, and I realized that other women found it to be useful. Behind the Confident Smile continued to expand its service offerings from meetups, books, and speaking engagements. I am motivated by each woman I have the opportunity to meet and the privilege of knowing how they have released fear, overcome challenges, and now can truly say they are not hiding behind their smiles.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Reflecting upon the impact that Behind the Confident Smile has had on women from diverse backgrounds, whether it's from reading one of my books, listening to a podcast episode, or attending a workshop.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Early on, I found it difficult to share who I am behind the business because my focus was on growing the business and getting the tasks done. I have learned over time that people want to learn more about the person they are purchasing services and products from.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with what you have. Take an inventory of the resources and tools you have at your fingertips.
  2. Continue to learn about all aspects of your business until you have the budget to grow your team.
  3. Pace yourself. You may have the desire to want to execute everything in one day. That will lead to burnout. Create a plan and remain flexible along the way.
